In many parts of the world, timber frame houses are the norm – it is a proven system with decades of reliable service.  Indeed, in the USA and Canada, over 90% of single and double storey buildings are constructed in timber frame whilst over 70% of people in the developed world live in timber frame houses. Timber framing is a fast method of construction, and is factory assembled ensuring higher quality control whilst minimising time on site.

It is the most popular form of constructing houses in Scotland, mainly due to its suitability for a cold climate, and its inherent energy efficiency enables home owners to enjoy comfortable living throughout the year.  In the UK, the majority of self-builders recognise the environmental benefits of timber frame construction because no other system is as simple, versatile or cost effective, whilst it benefits from U-values which are much higher than can be achieved with a traditional brick and block build.

Timber frame housing is also used extensively in hot and humid climates, including the most uninhabitable areas of Australia, Malaysia and elsewhere – proof that no matter what the weather extremes these construction methods can cope with climate change in the UK.
